Thursday night football: Providence Day, Latin win

David Echevarria came into the game with the big numbers, but his lesser-known Providence Day counterpart stole the thunder Thursday night.

Gavin Bronikowski, who started the season as second-string quarterback for the Chargers, threw six touchdown passes as Providence Day trounced visiting Ambassador Christian 51-14.

In Thursday night's other game, visiting Charlotte Latin stunned Cannon School 21-20, with the game decided on a blocked extra point.

Ambassador Christian's Echevarria had thrown for more than 1,700 yards -- the most for any prep quarterback in North Carolina -- and had helped lift the Lions to a 6-1 start.

But Providence Day's rugged defense shut down the Ambassador Christian passing game, limiting Echevarria to less than 160 yards in the air. Echevarria managed to throw a pair of touchdown passes, though.

Bronikowski had the big game, though. He started the season as backup to Cole Cater but took over the job when Cater was injured in the Chargers' only loss in seven games this season, to Hough.

On Thursday night, Bronikowski threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Preston Rachele in the first quarter, giving Providence Day a 10-0 lead. He then added scoring tosses of 10 and 49 yards to Braylon Clark early in the second quarter, as the Chargers built their margin to 24-0.

Before the night was over, Clark caught four touchdown passes.

Providence Day will finish its regular season against its three Big South foes, starting next Thursday at Charlotte Latin.

Charlotte Latin 21, Cannon School 20: Cannon School quarterback Lucas Lopez scored on a 16-yard run with about three minutes left, but Charlotte Latin's Zavious Dunson blocked the potential game-tying conversion kick.

The Hawks (3-4) then recovered an onside kick attempt by Cannon School (5-2) and ran out the clock.

Troy Logan threw three touchdown passes for Latin, with William Alt, Robert Comly and Walker Sammons on the receiving end.

Cannon School's other touchdowns came on a 6-yard run by Titus Troy and a pass from Lopez to Rudolph Davis.
