Here are last week’s Queen City Sports Report’s Boys’ Athletes of the Week:

Ahmn Byrd, Mooresville Cross Country, Sr.: 


The Blue Devils’ senior ran a personal-best 15:52 to finish second overall Saturday in the South Mecklenburg Cross Country Invite at McAlpine Greenway Park.


Byrd led the Mooresville team to a 14th-place finish at the same meet in a 41-team field.





Elijah Copeny, Davidson Day Soccer, Sr.: 

Copeny, a senior forward,  scored two goals and had one assist in a season-opening 9-0 victory Thursday over Liberty Prep Christian Academy.


Copeny put “the Liberty Prep defense under constant pressure,” the victory, according to Davidson Day soccer coach Patrick Letourneau.


Lemar Grier, A.L. Brown Football, Sr.: 

The 5-foot-9, 200-pound senior running back had 22 rushes for 172 yards and three touchdowns in A.L. Brown’s 42-10 victory Friday at Porter Ridge. The Wonders are 1-0 this season.

Mason Hefner, Lake Norman Football, Sr.: 


The 6-foot, 203-pound free safety/outside linebacker had four tackles and two interceptions in a 47-0 victory Thursday at Sun Valley. Hefner had 93 yards of return yardage on the interception returns. Hefner is an East Carolina University commit.







Isaiah Johnson, Mallard Creek Football, Jr.: 

The 6-foot, 200-pound junior middle linebacker recorded 15 tackles Thursday in a 45-25 win at Rolesville. Johnson also had three sacks and one forced fumble in the victory.


Keven Lopez, Monroe Soccer/Football, Sr.: 

Lopez, a senior, scored three goals last Monday in 3-0 win at Union Academy. Lopez followed that up with another goal last Wednesday in a 2-0 victory at Olympic.


Lopez, who is also the kicker on the Monroe football team, had four extra points and touchdown-saving tackle for the Redhawks in a 28-6, season-opening win Thursday over Hoke County.


Lopez has five goals for Monroe (soccer) (2-0-1) this season.


Edwin Ramirez, West Lincoln Soccer, Sr.: 

Ramirez, a senior forward, scored three goals and had one assist in a 4-3 victory last Tuesday over Crest. He also scored both goals in a 6-2 loss Thursday to Gaston Christian.


Ramirez has seven goals and one assist for West Lincoln (2-1) this season.


Jake Robbins, Marvin Ridge Football, Sr.: 

Robbins is a 5-11, 210-pound senior running back who had 150 yards rushing and four touchdowns on just 11 carries last Thursday in his team’s 77-13 rout of Cox Mill. Robbins also had one catch for eight yards in the win.

Carter Stevens, Christ the King Football, Sr.: 


The 6-foot, 185-pound senior wide receiver had three catches for 66 yards and two touchdowns last Thursday in a 36-33, season-opening win at Metrolina Christian,

Stevens also rushed for 17 yards and a touchdown.


He also plays defensive back and on special teams and had five tackles and 40 return yards in the same game.









Jayden Vences, South Stanly Soccer, Fr.: 

The Bulls’ freshman scored two goals and had one assist in the first game of high school career on Aug. 17, leading South Stanly to a 8-0 win over Anson County.
