Here are Queen CitySports Report’s Girls’ Athletes of Week

Each week, Queen City Sports Report will honor the top boys’ and girls’ high school athletes of the week.  Here are last week’s winners:

Aimery Coffey, Lake Norman Charter Girls’ Cross Country, Jr.:

The Knights’ junior ran a personal-best 18:35 to finish second of all varsity girls at the South Mecklenburg Cross Country Invite at McAlpine Greenway Park, on Saturday.

Sarah Haskell, Charlotte Catholic Field Hockey, Sr.: 

A senior, Haskell scored three goals in an 8-0 season-opening win last Tuesday at Cuthbertson. Haskell also had a goal in a 4-1 victory last Thursday over Charlotte Country Day.

Bella Jaworsky, North Lincoln Girls’ Cross Country, So.: 

The Knights’ sophomore ran an 18:37.14 to win the South Mecklenburg Cross Country Girls’ Invite Saturday at McAlpine Greenway Park. Jaworsky’s efforts also helped North Lincoln capture the girls’ team championship in the meet.

Leena Lohavichan, Providence Day Field Hockey, Sr.:

The Chargers’ senior scored three goals and had six assists to lead Providence Day to 3-0 start to the season.

Lohavichan helped Providence Day to 9-0 victory Aug. 14 at Carolina Day, a 2-0 triumph Aug. 15 at Asheville School, and a 6-0 victory last Tuesday over Providence.

Emery Lund, Weddington Field Hockey, Sr.:

Lund, a senior, scored three goals in a 10-0 victory last Tuesday over West Forsyth.

The next day, Lund had the game-tying goal in a 2-1 victory at Ardrey Kell.

Lund has five goals to help Weddington to their first 3-0 start in program history.

Avayah McKinnon, Davidson Day Volleyball, Jr.:

The Patriots’ junior outside hitter/opposite had 26 assists, six kills, 12 digs and two aces in a 3-1 win last Thursday at Calvary Day.

McKinnon has 82 assists, 26 kills, 52 digs and 10 aces for Davidson Day (5-1) this season. McKinnon is an University of Iowa commit. 

Ana Mullis, Union Academy Girls’ Tennis, So.:

Mullis, a sophomore, won 8-5 at No. 5 singles and 8-6 at No. 3 doubles in a 6-3 loss at Central Academy last Tuesday. Union Academy (1-2) also lost 9-0 Wednesday to North Stanly. Mullis is 2-1 singles and 1-1 in doubles’ play overall this season.

Ava Nadeau, Charlotte Latin Volleyball, Sr.:

The Hawks’ senior outside hitter had 79 kills, 51 digs and seven aces to help Charlotte Latin to a perfect 6-0 record last week.

Charlotte Latin (11-0) won 3-0 last Tuesday at Gaston Christian and 3-0 Thursday at Metrolina Christian.

The Hawks then won all four games in the same day to capture the Sun Valley tournament Saturday, sweeping Butler, Charlotte Catholic, Mallard Creek and host Sun Valley.

Emily Riordan, Myers Park Field Hockey, Sr.:

The Mustangs’ senior forward scored four goals in an 8-1 win last Tuesday over South Mecklenburg. The next day, Riordan had both goals in a 3-2 overtime loss at the defending N.C. High School Athletic Association state champion Cardinal Gibbons. Riordan is a Houghton University (NY) commit.

Alexandria Thompson, Palisades Volleyball, So.:

Thompson, a sophomore outside hitter, had 18 kills, four aces and eight digs in a 3-1 victory Thursday at Independence.

Thompson also had 17 kills, 11 digs and three aces Friday in a 3-2 loss to Stuart Cramer.

Thompson has 105 kills, 72 digs and 17 aces for Palisades (5-5) this season.
