Here are the Queen City Sports Report’s Athletes of the Week for last week.  These athletes were nominated by coaches:

John Capps, Metrolina Christian Cross Country, Junior: Capps ran a personal-best and school-record 15:45.40 last Thursday, winning the Metrolina Christian Fall Is Here Cross Country Bash.

 

Capps’ school-record run came against a field of 187 runners from 17 different schools.

Daniel Carter III, Harding Football, Junior: The 6-4, 195-pounder had five catches for 92 yards and five rushes for 28 yards in Friday’s 30-27 victory at Cox Mill.

 

Carter also had an interception for a touchdown in the same game.

 

For the season, Carter has 147 yards rushing, 194 yards receiving and 29 tackles for Harding (2-3).

 

Chris Dawkins, Burns Football, Junior: The 5-foot-8, 140-pound quarterback went 8-for-10 for 228 yards passing and four touchdowns Friday in 45-7 win at West Lincoln.

 

Dawkins also rushed for 72 yards and another touchdowns on six carries.

 

Burns is 4-2 overall this season.

Aury Greenfield, Jay M. Robinson Football, Senior: The 6-foot,180-pound quarterback went 12-for-14 for 200 yards passing and three touchdowns, while also rushing 75 yards and another score in a 55-7 win at Salisbury last Friday.

 

Greenfield has 875 yards passing and seven touchdowns, while also rushing for 301 yards and five more scores for the 5-0 Bulldogs this season.

 

Chayce Johnson, Covenant Day Soccer, Junior: Johnson scored a goal and had an assist in last Thursday’s 3-2 victory over Providence Day.

 

Johnson also had an assist in a 2-1 loss last Tuesday at Cannon School.

 

Johnson has seven goals and six assists for Covenant Day (6-5) this season.

 

Maxton Miller, Charlotte Christian Football, Senior: The 5-foot-8, 165-pound running back had 72 yards rushing and three touchdowns on nine carries, while also catching five passes for 49 yards and another score in a 51-21 win last Friday at Ravenscroft.

 

Miller, who also plays free safety on defense, also had an interception in the same game.

 

Charlotte Christian is 2-3 overall this season.

 

Otavio Oliveira, Providence Football, Senior: The Panthers’ wide receiver caught five passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns Friday, helping Providence to a 46-0 win at Rocky River.

 

Oliveira has 24 catches for 386 yards and two touchdowns for Providence (2-4) this season.

 

Joshua Tavares, Gaston Christian Soccer, So.: The Eagles’ sophomore scored the game-winning penalty kick in a shootout to lead Gaston Christian to victory over Concord Academy, last Tuesday.

 

Tavares also had a goal and two assists in a 3-2 overtime win Thursday over Metrolina Christian. Tavares’ goal was the game-winner.

 

Tavares finished the week with three goals and one assist Friday in a 5-0 win at Gaston Day.

 

Gaston Christian is 12-3 overall this season.

 

Cooper Troutman, Davidson Day Soccer, Junior: The Patriots’ center midfielder scored two goals and had one assist in a 5-0 win Friday at Grace Christian.

 

Davidson Day is 5-2 overall this season.

George Vlahos, Union Academy Soccer, So.: Vlahos scored both goals in the second half to lead Union Academy to a 3-1 win over Parkwood last Friday.

 

Vlahos has seven goals for Union Academy (4-9) this season.
