Thursday roundup: Another big win for Marvin Ridge
The Charlotte-area highest-scoring football team – at least, at this early point of the season – was at it again Thursday night.
Marvin Ridge steamrolled to a 43-0 halftime lead over Ballantyne Ridge, and that score held up as the final. The Mavericks’ output came a week after they scored 77 points in their opener against Cox Mill.
Marvin Ridge’s big victory was among a handful of games played – or, at least, started – Thursday night. With thunderstorms in the forecast for Friday night, several schools elected to move their games forward a night. One of those contests, East Lincoln at Providence, fell victim to a storm.
Levi Kerr, who threw five touchdown passes a week ago for Marvin Ridge, had four more scoring tosses Thursday night. Jake Robbins ran for two more touchdowns, and Ford Fehling added a field goal.
It was not a lost night for Ballantyne Ridge. Pumas’ quarterback Ryan Rizzuti completed 17-of-20 passes for 235 yards, but his team was only able to muster 29 rushing yards against the Mavericks.
Here is a look at Thursday’s area prep sports:
FOOTBALL
East Lincoln-Providence: Georgia commit Jaxon Dollar was the star of the show in this game, which was curtailed by bad weather. Dollar picked off a Luke Meador pass on an acrobatic leap and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown. He also caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Davis Beam.
Providence scored on a Meadow-to-Caleb Vines touchdown pass and a 37-yard field goal by Jamison Causey.
A thunderstorm halted the game with 2:30 left in the third quarter and East Lincoln leading 19-10. The contest is scheduled to resume, weather permitting, at 6 p.m. Friday.
Ashbrook 35, Berry Academy 7: Ashbrook quarterback A.J. McClain was too much for the Cardinals, as McClain threw three touchdown passes.
East Gaston 33, Forestview 16: East Gaston built a 19-0 lead after three quarters and held on.
Forest Hills 28, Fairmont 20: The Yellow Jackets trailed 20-7 on the road against their Robeson County opponents but rallied behind quarterback Makhi Massey.
Massey dashed 68 yards in the third quarter, bringing his team within 20-14. Then he completed a 25-yard pass to Kam Mills in the fourth quarter, and Alex Zambrano’s conversion kick put Forest Hills ahead to stay 21-20.
Fairmont then fumbled the ball away at its 25, and Massey threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Larry Parker on fourth down.
Hunter Huss 61, Bessemer City 6: J.J. Mackins threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, as the Huskies rolled to victory. Caleb Kendrick ran for two touchdowns, including a 65-yard scamper, and Jakelan Littlejohn scored on an interception return.
Lincolnton 55, North Lincoln 15: Rashad Lynch passed for four touchdowns and ran for two more, as the Wolves walloped their in-county foes. Two of Lynch’s scoring tosses were to Messiah Thompson, including a 70-yarder. The others were to Lynch’s brother, R.J., and to Dailen Adams.
Jarvis Littlejohn also ran for a pair of touchdowns.
Montgomery Central 34, Anson County 12: Anson trailed only 7-6 at halftime but allowed three Montgomery Central touchdowns in the third quarter.
Mount Pleasant 44, Jesse Carson 28: The Tigers outscored Carson 22-6 in the second half and pulled away in the third quarter with a touchdown pass by Keen Yount and a scoring run by Jett Biles.
South Davidson 35, Bonnie Cone Academy 0: Bonnie Cone Academy was trailing only 14-0 in the third quarter and drove to the South Davidson 25. But the drive stalled, and the Eagles faded. The host Wildcats converted two interceptions into touchdowns.

Carmel Christian 5, Union Academy 0: The Cougars’ Caleb Starkey scored three times.
Charlotte Catholic 3, West Forsyth 2: The Cougars (5-0), ranked No. 1 in the state by Maxpreps, got goals from Tatenda Mandaveki, Braden Mathis and Emmett Drensek.
Christ the King 3, SouthLake Christian 0: The Crusaders’ Sam Casanova had a goal and an assist.
Community School of Davidson 4, North Mecklenburg 2: Noah Slack scored three goals for the hosts.

Lake Norman Charter 117, Charlotte Catholic 125: Caitlyn Frisch and Seehe Veera each shot a one-over 37 in leading Lake Norman Charter.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Myers Park swept the boys’ and girls’ team titles in a home meet. In the boys’ race, East Mecklenburg’s Forest Parmenter won in a time of 20:38 over the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course. Lillian Broadway of Piedmont was the girls’ winner in 22:05.
