Thursday Tourney Central: Here’s Who Moved On
Marvin Ridge’s next obstacle in a bid for a second straight girls’ volleyball state championship is a red-hot Mooresville team.
The defending Class 7A state champion Mavericks beat Union County neighbor Cuthbertson 3-1 on Thursday night in the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.
Meanwhile, Mooresville pulled a mild upset, edging Southwest Guilford 3-2.
Those matches were part of a busy Thursday that included NCHSAA volleyball playoffs, along with soccer and volleyball playoffs for the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association.

Top-seeded Marvin Ridge ran its record to 28-0 with its third victory this season over Cuthbertson.
In Saturday’s state quarterfinals, the Mavericks will host a Mooresville (21-8) team that is seeded fifth but downed fourth-seeded Southwest Guilford 3-2 Thursday. The Blue Devils knocked off 6A powerhouse North Iredell a week ago and have won six matches in a row.
They trailed Southwest Guilford 2-1 in sets Thursday night but won the fourth set, then took the deciding set 15-12. Mooresville led 13-9 in the fifth set, but Southwest Guilford closed to 13-12. The Blue Devils’ strong front line then made key plays and closed out the match.
Other volleyball highlights from Thursday night:
In Class 8A, Ardrey Kell downed Hough 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-20) and will visit West Forsyth next Tuesday in the state semifinals.
Defending 4A state champion and top seed Lake Norman Charter blanked Fred T. Foard 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-17) and will host fourth-seeded East Gaston in a quarterfinal match Saturday.
Advancing in Class 2A were sixth-seeded Christ the King, which upset third seed Mountain Island Charter 3-2 (25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 15-8); and second seed Community School of Davidson, which beat Highland Tech 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 18-25, 25-13).
In NCISAA soccer, Covenant Day and Charlotte Latin dropped their Class 4A quarterfinal matches.
Covenant Day played well but fell 5-4 to top-seeded Rabun Gap School. Zeke Bugenske, Zeb Engstrom and Chayce Johnson scored for Covenant Day, which also got an own goal by Rabun Gap.
Jack Lilly got Charlotte Latin’s only goal in a 3-1 loss to Christ School.
In Class 3A soccer, SouthLake Christian blanked Asheville School 2-0, behind goals by Lazar Catanazano and Josiah Stein.
