The Charlotte 49ers already had a road game against Ohio State on their future schedule.

Now they’ve added a contest against the Buckeyes’ rival.

49ers officials announced last week that Charlotte will travel to the Big House, to face Michigan on Week 2 of the 2028 season.  It will be Charlotte’s first-ever game against the Wolverines.

The 49ers announced last year that they’d travel to Ohio State in Week 2 of the 2929 campaign.

The 49ers in previous years played two other Big Ten teams – Illinois in 2021 and Indiana in 2024.

Here is Charlotte’s nonconference schedule in coming seasons:

2027

Sept. 4: at Ole Miss

Sept. 11: Elon

Sept. 18: App State

Sept. 25: at Old Dominion

2028

Sept. 2: Charleston Southern

Sept. 9: at Michigan

Sept. 16: at App State

(one more game TBA)

2029

Sept. 1: Wofford

Sept. 8: at Ohio State

Sept. 15: App State

Sept. 22: James Madison

2030

Aug. 31: Western Carolina

Sept. 7: at N.C. State

TBA: App State

(one more game TBA)

In addition, the 49ers have games scheduled with N.C. State (home, Sept. 6) and Old Dominion (home, Sept. 20) in 2031; and at Louisiana (Sept. 18) in 2032.

Hoops news: Speaking of schedules, coach Wes Miller and the Charlotte 49ers’ men’s basketball team have added an Oct. 27 exhibition game at North Carolina.  Miller, first-year coach of the 49ers, is a UNC alum, of course.

And if you  haven’t heard, Miller has lost a player and gained another in recent weeks. Jizzie James, who played under Miller at Cincinnati, has left the program.  But the 49ers have landed Chaze Harris, from South Alabama, through the transfer portal.

Harris is the reigning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and averaged 19.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.9 assists last season.  He is part of what appears to be a strong first-year lineup for Miller in Charlotte.

Kickoff time set: The 49ers’ home game next Saturday against Louisiana will kick off at 6:30 p.m. and will be televised by ESPN+.  That is Family Weekend.

Next week’s contest is the last nonconference game of the season for Charlotte.

Soccer honors: Both the men’s and women’s soccer goalkeepers for the 49ers have won American Conference Goalkeeper of the Week honors recently. Harlee Head of the women’s team won last week, for her shutout play in Charlotte’s 3-0 victory over Mississippi State.

And men’s keeper Alex Svetanoff won the award this week, after allowing one goal in Charlotte’s victory last Friday over Florida Atlantic.

The Wildcats’ women’s basketball team will host a free clinic next week for girls in grades 1-6.  The clinic will be from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday at the Vance Athletic Center.

Queens Univ. of Charlotte

Daniel Bailey, associate head coach of the men’s basketball team, is part of the class announced last week for induction into the Queens University of Charlotte Hall of Fame.

Inductees will be honored at Queens’ homecoming, next Feb. 5-6.

Others being honored are former Queens athletics director and women’s basketball coach Jeannie King; the 2016 men’s and women’s swim teams that won national championships, and former volleyball standout Keri Kemp Sparrow.

Bailey, who played at Queens from 2008-12, is the school’s all-time leader in field goals made and attempted and is second in rebounds.

King was head coach of the women’s basketball team from 1993 to 2003 and athletics director from 1998 to 2016.  She headed the school’s athletic department during a time of rapid growth and was a key figure in developing the school’s outdoor sports complex at Marion Diehl Park.

Sparrow played on volleyball teams that reached the NCAA Tournament in Division 2. She holds the school record for career kills.

Lenoir-Rhyne

Lenoir-Rhyne’s Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony takes place at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the P.E. Monroe Auditorium on campus.  Inductees will be honored at halftime of the Bears’ football game, set for 6 p.m. Saturday against Mars Hill.

Inductees are Cameron Sealey-Fiachofsky (women’s basketball, Class of 2012), who later coached at Lenoir-Rhyne and Belmont Abbey; Haily Jarman (softball, 2014), a shortstop who now teaches and coaches at West Stanly High; Chrissy Elliott (women’s basketball, 1996), who earned academic all-America honors and now runs a nonprofit sports agency in the Orlando area; Tanner Botts (football and lacrosse, 2015), who ranks second in forced fumbles and third in career tackles and now lives in Columbus, Ga.

Also, Reggie Bratton (men’s basketball, 2008), who led the Bears to a pair of NCAA berths and now lives in Salisbury; Demetrius Green (football, 2012), the 2011 South Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Year who now lives in Cedartown, Ga.; Jarrod Spears (football, 2015), who holds the school single-season rushing record of 1,886 and lives in Raleigh; Ben Bundy, a football player in the early 1970s and longtime supporter of athletics.

Also, Frank Pait, who won 291 games as baseball coach over 11 seasons in the 1990s and 2000s; the 1980-81 women’s basketball team, which reached the Division 2 Final Four; and the 1975 football team, which finished 7-3-1 and featured seven all-conference players and all-America tailback Scott Crawford.
