The 90th Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, matching all-star teams from North Carolina and South Carolina, is set for Dec. 19 in Spartanburg.

Royal is among two Hough players selected by coaches for the North Carolina squad.  He will be joined by defensive back Jackson Heath.  They are part of a Huskies’ team that is ranked No. 1 in the Queen City Sports Report’s Top 12. Hough is generally considered to be the No. 1 team in the state in all classes.

Two other area schools, Forest Hills and Lake Norman, also will have a pair of players on the team.

There is another familiar name on the rosters.  One of the quarterbacks for the South Carolina team is Jaxon Knotts, of Dutch Fork.  He is the son of Dutch Fork coach Tommy Knotts, who turned Independence High into a national power two decades ago.

Area players picked for the game:

Burns: Gage Camp, offensive line.

Corvian Community: Nate Kamba, defensive line.

Crest: Majay Thompson, running back.

Forest Hills: Kai Phinazee, defensive line; Chris Baker, linebacker.

Hough: Ethan Royal, quarterback; Jackson Heath, Hough.

Lake Norman: Sammy Wooten, offensive line; Mason Hefner, defensive back.

Mallard Creek: Dorian (D.J.) Dailey, defensive back.

Full rosters for the game are listed at the end of this article.

Munnerlyn, Grier picked for Senior Bowl

Captain Munnerlyn and Chad Grier have been named head coaches for the ninth Queen City Senior Bowl, set for Dec. 19 in Charlotte.  A game time and site have not been announced, although the game has been played at Olympic High for several years.

The Queen City Senior Bowl matches top high school seniors from Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell and Lincoln counties.

Munnerlyn, a former Carolina Panthers defensive back, is head coach of unbeaten Chambers High.  Grier is head coach of defending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state champion Providence Day.

Players for the game will be announced later this fall.
