Charlotte-area players put on an overwhelming display Monday in the opening round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association girls’ golf championships.

Area teams lead five of the seven tournaments, with three of the teams seeking repeat state team championships. And Charlotte-area golfers are atop the individual competition in five of the events.

All of the tournaments are 36-hole events, with final rounds Tuesday.

Charlotte Catholic (Class 6A), Lake Norman Charter (4A) and Pine Lake Prep (3A) took big leads in their bids to repeat as state champs.  Also atop the tournament field are Lake Norman (7A) East Lincoln (5A).

Area golfers are leading the tournaments in Classes 6A, 5A, 4A, 3A and 1A/2A.

Here is a look at how the various tournaments are going after Day 1:

CLASS 8A (at Pinehurst No. 1)

Defending state champion Pinecrest has three of the top four individuals and built a 32-stroke lead over second-place Ardrey Kell after one round.  Pinehurst golfers Ashley Lee and Ira Joshi each fired 6-under-par 66’s, which was one shot off the state tournament record.

Hough’s Avery Gordish is tied for eighth.

Lake Norman's Kami Caraccia has helped her team gain the lead in the Class 7A state girls' golf finals.
