QC Sports Report’s Girls’ Athletes of the Week
Here are the Queen City Sports Report’s Boys’ High School Athletes of the Week. Athletes selected for the award must be nominated by coaches.
Karlye Clay, Burns Volleyball, senior.: The Bulldogs’ outside hitter had 49 kills, 41 digs, four aces and two blocks to lead Burns to 3-0 record last week.
Clay’s play helped Burns to 3-0 wins over Cherryville (Sept. 1), Bessemer City (last Wednesday), and at Freedom (last Thursday).
Clay has 137 kills, 147 digs, 26 aces and five blocks for Burns (6-6) this season.
Madison Daniel, Providence Day Volleyball, junior: The Chargers’ middle blocker had nine blocks last Wednesday, helping shut down the Metrolina Christian offense in a 3-0 road victory.
Daniel has 27 blocks, 22 kills, 11 digs and eight aces for Providence Day (3-4) this season.
Providence Day faces Carmel Christian (Tuesday) and South Charlotte Thunder (Wednesday) this week, then moves into CISAA conference action next week.
Bryce Eddy, Ardrey Kell Girls’ Golf, sophomore: Eddy shot a four-under-par 32, to lead Ardrey Kell to victory in a
Southwestern 7A/8A conference match Aug. 31 at Charles T. Myers Golf Club.
Eddy also shot a 1-over-par 37, to help Ardrey Kell to a victory last Wednesday over Providence at Ballantyne Country Club. Ardrey Kell is 2-0 overall this season.
Caitlyn Frisch, Lake Norman Charter Girls’ Golf, senior: Frisch shot a 1-under-paqr 35, with three consecutive birdies, to earn co-medalist honors in a match last Wednesday at Mooresville Golf Club. The Knights were competing against Christ the King, Community School of Davidson and Pine Lake Prep in a Catawba Shores 2A/3A/4A conference match.
The next day, Frisch shot a 2-under 34, with four birdies, to earn medalist honors in a victory over Lake Norman at Skybrook Golf Club.
Chloe Hoover, Mooresville Volleyball, senior: The Blue Devils’ opposite side hitter had 21 kills, 15 digs and four blocks combined in two matches and helped lead Mooresville to a 3-0 victory last Wednesday at Maiden and a 3-2 home victory Thursday over Alexander Central.
Hoover has 81 kills, 19 digs and 19 blocks for Mooresville (8-6) this season.
Lila Jones, Covenant Day Volleyball, senior: The Lions’ outside hitter/middle blocker had 10 kills, eight digs, two aces and two blocks in leading Covenant Day to a 3-0 victory last Wednesday over Union Academy.
Jones has 139 kills, 128 digs, 25 aces, 16 assists and 10 blocks for Covenant Day (6-11) this season.
Ella Martin, Lake Norman Golf, junior: Martin shot a 1-under-par 35 and finished second overall individually in a team loss to Lake Norman Charter at Skybrook Golf Club.
Martin, who two birdies in her round, is averaging a score of 39.8 per nine holes this season.
Avayah McKinnon, Davidson Day Volleyball, junior: The Patriots’ setter had 40 assists, 23 kills, 24 digs, six aces and three blocks in two matches combined last week. She helped lead Davidson Day to a 3-2 victory last Wednesday at Kings Mountain, and then a 3-0 victory Thursday at Winston-Salem Christian.
McKinnon, a University of Iowa commit, has 149 assists, 67 kills, 103 digs, 19 aces and 12 blocks for Davidson Day (9-1) this season.
Ada Savage, Myers Park Field Hockey, senior: The Mustangs’ forward had four goals in a 5-0 win Aug. 31 at South Mecklenburg.
Savage, an American University commit, has five goals and two assists for Myers Park (4-1) this season.
Harper Schwartz, Charlotte Country Day Girls’ Cross Country, senior The Buccaneers’ standout ran a 19:02.37 to finish sixth individual Saturday in the International Division of the Eye Opener Invitational in Spartanburg.
Her run also led the Charlotte Country girls’ team to a 10th-place finish in the 43-team field.
