Queen City Sports Report’s Girls’ Athletes of Week
Here are the Queen City Sports Report’s Girls’ Athletes of the Week. These girls were nominated by area coaches:
Shola Bey, West Charlotte Girls’ Tennis, Junior: Bey won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and 8-0 at No. 1 doubles, leading West Charlotte to a 5-4 win last Tuesday over Butler.
Bey also had a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles and an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles in a 7-2 win last Thursday over Mallard Creek.
Bey is 4-0 at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for West Charlotte (4-0) this season.
Caitlin Kasten, Marvin Ridge Girls’ Cross Country, Senior: The Mavericks’ senior ran a 17:42.11 to finish third overall individual in the Friday Night Lights’ Cross Country Festival girls’ championship race last Friday at Ivey Redmon Sports’ Complex in Kernersville.

Kasten’s efforts also helped the Marvin Ridge girls’ cross country team to a victory at the same event.
Mali Pillai, Providence Day Girls’ Golf, Senior: Pillai shot a 1-under par 71, to win the Legion Collegiate Invitational last Tuesday at Rock Hill Country Club.
Pillai, who had four birdies in her round, won the individual championship by six shots. Her round also led the Providence Day team to 47-shot victory at the event.
Madie Rand, Covenant Day Girls’ Cross Country, Sophomore: Rand turned in a person-best time of 17:55 to the Black Division race Saturday at the Knights’ Crossing Invitational in Salem, Va.
Rand, who won her race by more than 1:16, also led the Covenant Day girls’ cross country team to victory at the meet.
Ada Savage, Myers Park Field Hockey, Senior: Savage, a forward, scored two goals and had one assist last Tuesday in a 10-0 win over Ballantyne Ridge. The next day, Savage added one more goal and one more assist in a 2-1 win over Marvin Ridge.
Myers Park (6-2) also lost 4-0 last Thursday at Charlotte Country Day.
Savage has eight goals and four assists for Myers Park this season.
Victoria Simons, Marvin Ridge Volleyball, Senior: Simons, a right side/outside hitter, had 11 kills and 14 digs last Tuesday in a 3-0 win over Southern Carolina 7A/8A opponent Porter Ridge.
Simons also had 13 kills and 13 digs last Thursday in a 3-0 conference victory at Charlotte Catholic.
Simons has 179 kills and 126 digs for a Marvin Ridge team (15-2) that has won 10 straight matches this season.
Elliott Stafford, Providence Girls’ Flag Football, Junior: The Panthers’ junior quarterback threw 10 touchdown passes, had one rushing touchdown and two interceptions to lead Providence to home victories over Union Academy (60-0) and North Mecklenburg (34-6) last Wednesday.
Those were Providence’s first games of the season.
Halo Stapleton, Charlotte Latin Volleyball, Junior: Stapleton, a setter, had 34 assists, six digs and three aces last Thursday in a 3-0 victory over the South Charlotte Thunder.
Stapleton has 475 assists, 113 digs and 30 aces for a Charlotte Latin team that is unbeaten at 17-0 overall this season.
Ellie Watson, Charlotte Country Day Volleyball, Sophomore: The Buccaneers’ outside hitter had nine kills, five digs and two aces in a 3-1 victory last Tuesday over High Point’s Wesleyan Christian.
Watson added 13 kills, 10 digs and eight aces in a 3-0 victory last Thursday over Metrolina Christian.
Watson has 98 kills, 34 digs and 34 aces for Charlotte Country Day (8-2) this season.
Brooklyn Young, Palisades’ Girls’ Flag Football, Senior: The Pumas’ senior quarterback went 12-for-19 for 235 yards passing and three touchdowns in a 24-0 win last Wednesday at Hopewell.
Young also had three rushes for 23 yards in the season-opening victory.
