Joining them as state champions was Lake Norman Charter’s Kate Champion.

They were the big winners on a Saturday that also featured quarterfinal matches in the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s girls’ volleyball playoffs … plus quarterfinals in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs.

Aull, a junior, took the 3A title Saturday at Burlington Tennis Center and is now three-for-three as a high school state champion.

She swept past Regan Vandiver of N.C. School of Math & Science/Durham by scores of 6-0, 6-0 on Saturday morning.

Castellanos-Trujillo, a sophomore, is now two-for-two as a high school player in Class 7A.  She downed Cuthbertson’s Ayana Govind 6-0, 6-1 in the championship match at Millbrook Exchange in Raleigh.

McWilliams teamed with Avery Johnson to win the Class 6A doubles title at the Holly Springs Tennis Complex near Raleigh.  They cruised past Watauga’s Abby Talton and Zoey Wells 6-1, 6-2 for the championship.

McWilliams won the 6A doubles title last year with Ella Davis.

And Champion prevailed in Class 4A at Burlington Tennis Center.  She was hard-pressed by Brevard’s Sophie Owen but prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

Defending state champions Marvin Ridge (Class 7A) and Lake Norman Charter (4A) advanced with quarterfinal victories.  Also winning Saturday were North Iredell (6A), North Stanly (3A) and Community School of Davidson (2A).

State semifinals are Tuesday.

Marvin Ridge (29-3) ended a five-match winning streak for Mooresville (21-9), beating the Blue Devils 25-22, 25-13, 24-26 and 25-20.

The Mavericks’ Victoria Simons had the final kill in the first set, and teammate Jamie Carnes did the same in the second set.  The Mavs went up 19-14 in the third set, but Mooresville battled back, evening the match on a point by Danielle Faucette and winning on a kill by Kelsey Fliss.

The Blue Devils led 18-15 in the fourth set, but Marvin Ridge went on a 10-2 run and won when Mooresville couldn’t return a serve.

In 6A, North Iredell had a tough battle with Alexander Central but held on 3-2. Set scores were 25-19, 22-25, 17-25, 25-22 and 15-12.

Lake Norman Charter coasted in the 4A quarterfinals, sweeping East Gaston 25-8, 25-187 and 25-17. London Stewart totaled 12 kills.  In the 4A East quarterfinals, West Stanly fell 3-1 to Carrboro.

North Stanly downed Hendersonville in Class 3A, by scores of 25-9, 25-20, 24-26 and 25-21.

And in 2A, it was an all-Catawba Shores Conference match.  Community School of Davidson swept Christ the King 25-19, 25-17, 25-16.
