Some familiar faces bringing you sports each day
Queen City Sports Report is your new daily source for Charlotte-area scores, game reports and schedules – plus a look at each week’s top athletes. Longtime area journalists Steve Lyttle and Jay Edwards will bring you a full daily report on the area’s high schools and colleges.

Thanks for joining us at the Queen City Sports Report – your new source for information and updates about the Charlotte area’s high school and college sports teams and athletes.
I’m Steve Lyttle, and I’m joined in this venture by Jay Edwards.
If you’re a fan of high school and college sports, you’ll probably recognize our names. I was a writer and editor at the Charlotte Observer for 48 years, on either a full-time or part-time basis. My partner, Jay Edwards, worked with the Observer for about 25 years.
Jay and I became “free agents” in May, after some major newspaper staff-cutting. We sat around for a few months, mowing our lawns and walking our dogs and taking summer vacations. We probably drove our wives crazy.
But when the area’s high school and college sports teams began drills, Jay and I started talking about a venture like this – where we could do things our way. And what exactly is “our way”? What will you find in Queen City Sports Report?
Well, let’s look at the fall sports season. You’ll get:
Schedules and previews of each week’s area high school and college football games.
A complete roundup of every area high school football game. We’ll get as many games reported on Friday night as possible. But by Saturday morning, we expect that you’ll find at least a few details on EVERY area game.
A daily roundup of the other prep sports – boys’ soccer, girls’ volleyball, girls’ tennis, girls’ flag football (yes, that season begins next month), girls’ field hockey, and cross-country.
For you college fans, we’ll have schedules and previews each week. And on Saturday night and Sunday morning, you’ll find a roundup of EVERY game involving a Carolinas team. We’ll focus on Charlotte, Davidson, Johnson C. Smith, Wingate, Lenoir-Rhyne, Catawba, Livingstone and Gardner-Webb – the area schools. But our roundup will have it all.
And here’s a big one. Jay Edwards will bring his popular Athletes of the Week feature with him to Queen City Sports Report.
We’ll also bring you standings, rankings, feature stories, and columns. We’re developing some nice social media coverage too.
Let me say this. Jay and I both worked with the king of Carolinas prep sports coverage – the Observer’s Langston Wertz. We encourage you to keep following Langston. He’ll break stories that nobody else gets, and he’s a great source for prep sports news.
It’s always a good idea to have multiple sources for your news.
We’re just happy to be one of your options.
