Thursday prep roundup: Providence Day rolls
Providence Day launched its bid for another Big South football championship Thursday night by overpowering host Charlotte Latin 49-7.

The Chargers, ranked No. 3 this week in the Queen City Sports Report’s Top 12, rode the arm of quarterback Gavin Bronikowski, and improved to 7-1 overall.
Charlotte Latin fell to 3-5. This was the Big South opener for each team.
Only Charlotte Country Day and Charlotte Christian stand in the way of Providence Day winning a fourth straight conference championship. The Chargers last Big South loss was four years ago, to Charlotte Christian.
In Thursday’s contest, the Chargers raced to a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter. The Hawks scored early in the second quarter on a quarterback keeper by Troy Logan. That touchdown was set up by an interception.
But Providence Day scored three more times in the first half for a 35-7 lead at intermission.
Bronikowski, who moved into the starting role in late August after Cole Cater was injured, was sharp Thursday night. He completed 11-of-14 passes for 183 yards and four touchdowns. Max Cassell had five catches for 87 yards.
The defense also stepped up, with Ashton Gibbs making an interception and Griff Galloway recovering a fumble.
