Wednesday prep roundup: Marvin Ridge, Catholic finish in tie … barely
Charlotte Catholic and Marvin Ridge appeared headed for co-championships in the Southern Carolina 6A/7A boys’ soccer race.
Cuthbertson came close to ruining the whole thing for Charlotte Catholi, on the final night of the regular season.
In the end, though, the Cougars and Mavericks finished the season as co-champs, with 11-1 conference records.
But Charlotte Catholic needed a goal in the second overtime to beat visiting Cuthbertson 1-0. Marvin Ridge, meanwhile, coasted past Sun Valley 6-0.
Cuthbertson, the conference’s fourth-place team, used a gutsy defensive effort to stay locked in a scoreless tie through more than 85 minutes of its match against Charlotte Catholic (21-1, 11-1).
But the Cougars, who suffered their only regular-season loss Monday night to Marvin Ridge, got a goal from Daniel Collins, with an assist from Rogan Crenshaw, to win the game.
Marvin Ridge (17-2, 11-1) got three goals from Collin McKee, while Colton Perkins added a goal and an assist.
6-goal effort

Jonah Wargin turned in one of the season’s top performances Wednesday night.
Wargin scored six goals and helped lead Christ the King to a 10-2 rout of visiting Corvian Community. Wargin finished the regular season with 31 goals and 10 assists. His previous best effort was a four-goal outburst Sept. 8 against Queen’s Grant Charter.
Luke Harris supported Wargin’s effort with two goals.
