Wednesday prep roundup: Mooresville surprises N. Iredell in volleyball

Oct 15
6 min read

Mooresville waited until the last night of the girls’ volley all regular season to make what might have been its biggest victory.

The Blue Devils, fueled by front-liners Kelsey Fliss and Darcelle Faucette, knocked off regular-season champ and No. 1 seed North Iredell 3-1 in the finals of the North Piedmont 6A/7A conference tournament.

On a night full of conference tournament championships, Mooresville’s win was probably the biggest surprise.

The Blue Devils (19-8), seeded second, had lost twice this season to top seed North Iredell (23-2).  Coach Dave Markland’s Raiders will be the West’s No. 1 seed in the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs, which start Saturday – and a prime contender for the 6A state title.

But Weddington, which will be seeded either fourth or fifth in Class 7A West, got the victory.

The Blue Devils took a 2-0 set lead by winning 27-25 and 25-23.  North Iredell rallied for a 25-20 victory, but Mooresville played its best volleyball of the night in the fourth set, winning 25-12.

Fliss had 17 kills and 10 blocks, while Faucette added 13 kills.  Siena DiTomas totaled 50 assists.
