Thursday roundup: Chambers football win, plus soccer and more
Chambers overcame some early mistakes Thursday night and survived a test with a small Charlotte school that has proved to be a headache for some of the area’s bigger opposition.
The Cougars went on a 27-0 run in the second half and trounced Corvian Community 54-14.
The victory by the 8A Cougars over the Class 2A Cardinals came one week after Corvian had shut out 7A Independence 19-0. And a year ago, Corvian gave 7A Butler a tough game.
It was close for a half Thursday night, as Chambers took a 27-14 lead at intermission.
The Cougars went up 14-0, but Corvian narrowed the gap to 14-7 on a 25-yard pass from Tyson Douglas-Brown to Cam Simpson. Two Chambers penalties helped keep that drive going for the Cardinals.
And after Chambers expanded its lead to 21-7, Corvian scored when Jesiah Fields recovered a fumble on a quarterback sack and ran 27 yards for a touchdown. That made it 21-14, but the Cougars drove and scored on a 1-yard run by Keland Shelton shortly before the half.
In the second half, Chambers pulled away. The Cougars’ defense prevented Corvian Community from mounting an effective drive, and the Chambers offense got three touchdown passes from Jamouri Nichols.
Malachi Gant had three touchdown receptions on the night.

Boys’ soccer
Aden Watkins scored both goals in leading host Providence to a 2-1 victory over Marvin Ridge in a battle of state-ranked teams.
Providence, ranked 12th in the state by MaxPreps, improved to 6-2-1 on the season.
Marvin Ridge, ranked 10th, suffered its first loss after five opening victories. Colin McKee scored for the Mavericks.

Charlotte Latin 1, Forestview 0: Carter Gannett scored off an assist from Thomas Warlick, and the sixth-ranked Hawks improved to 8-1. Goalkeeper Cooper Fights made seven saves.
Covenant Day 2, Raleigh Ravenscroft 0: Zeb Engstrom and Chayce Johnson scored for the Lions, and Johnson also had an assist.
East Mecklenburg 1, Cuthbertson 1: Grayson Rich scored for East Meck, while Nicholas Of got the Cavaliers’ score.
