Wednesday roundup: Who were the big flag football winners?
Defending Mecklenburg County champion Palisades was among several Charlotte-area teams that got off to a big start Wednesday in the opening night of state-sanctioned high school girls’ flag football.
Palisades, which has won the Charlotte-Mecklenburg championship three straight years, opened with a 24-0 shutout of host Hopewell.
Meanwhile, three other teams – Butler, Providence and West Charlotte – each won two games Wednesday night.

Boys’ soccer
Charlotte Catholic won a battle of unbeatens Wednesday night, blanking visiting Piedmont 3-0 in a Southern Carolina 6A/7A match.
The Cougars (8-0, 1-0), ranked No. 1 in the state this week by MaxPreps, got two goals and an assist from Braden Mathis. Charlotte Catholic also was able to shut down Piedmont’s Meliksah Kusoglu, who entered the match with eight goals and 10 assists this season.
Piedmont fell to 8-1, 0-1.
