Tuesday roundup: Cougars, Hawks score big wins
Charlotte Catholic and Charlotte Latin each won a battle of state-ranked boys’ high school soccer teams Tuesday.
Charlotte Catholic, ranked No. 2 in North Carolina by MaxPreps, went on the road and downed No. 7 Providence 4-2.
Meanwhile, 13th-ranked Charlotte Latin edged No. 8 Charlotte Country Day 2-1 in a CISAA match.
The Cougars (7-0) got two goals and an assist from Rogan Crenshaw. Tatenda Mandiyevi and Emmett Drensek each added goals for Charlotte Catholic. Providence fell to 5-2-1.
Providence’s goal-scorers were Aiden Watkins and Wyatt Granger.
In the CISAA match, Charlotte Latin (7-1) got two goals from Will Hobbs, as the Hawks broke a 1-1 halftime tie with the Buccaneers (5-1). Hobbs has seven goals and seven assists this season.
Cooper Fights had nine saves in goal for the Hawks.

Bell wins in return
Longtime Ardrey Kell volleyball coach Zoe Bell returned to the Knights’ gym Tuesday – but this time, as coach of Marvin Ridge.
And Bell’s Mavericks, ranked 16th in the state, edged the Knights 3-2 in a closely-fought match.
Bell left the southeast Charlotte school at the end of the 2025-26 school year and moved to defending 7A state champion Marvin Ridge, after Mavericks’ coach Brook Hammers retired and moved to Florida.
In Tuesday’s match, Ardrey Kell took the opening set 25-21, but the Mavericks came back with 25-18 and 25-22 victories. The Knights forced a fifth set with a 25-20 victory, but Marvin Ridge took the deciding set 15-12.
Victoria Simons had 17 kills, and Ciara Drake added 15 kills and 16 digs for Marvin Ridge.

South Mecklenburg 3, Ardrey Kell 1: The Sabres broke a 1-1 halftime tie and down their southeast Charlotte rivals.
SouthLake Christian 5, Hickory Christian 0: Max Petrosky recorded 10 saves in earning the shutout in goal. Mike Lazes (one goal, two assists) and Josiah Stein (one goal, one assist) led the Eagles’ offense.

Lake Norman Charter won its Catawba Shores 2A/3A/4A conference match at Skybrook by 10 shots. Caitlyn Frisch shot a 1-under 35, and Seehe Veera added a 36.
